My work deals with order and disorder. I attempt to make sense of a world that has none and leaves me feeling anxious. I create images that explore the creation of the world, birth, who we are and how we have come to be both in reality and (my) imaginary. My work is meditative, time intensive, immersive, sensitive. It is a form of avoidance. Distance from every day feelings and fears.
I like working with embroidery for its meditative quality. It is repetitive and spiritual. I like to touch and feel textiles and textures. I wrap myself in them like a cocoon that keeps me safe and warm like a soft breeze on a hot summer’s day. Picking out brightly colored thread, sequins, beads, and fabric brings me closer to the magical fantasy world filled with love and joy I come to call home.
Lily Rosen (b. 1993, Princeton New Jersey) grew up in a college town with brooks, canals, and farms. Growing up in Princeton she spent much of her time climbing trees and collecting bouquets of daffodils and tulips. Nature and childhood is a great inspiration in her work.
Upon leaving New Jersey she went on to receive her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2015) where she studied film and animation. Once moving to New York (2016) she found herself gravitating towards theatre work in New York City as a puppet and props builder, which inspired a more theatrical and time intensive look at art making. Inspiring larger pieces that register as backdrops to a larger and mystical world. She focuses on fiber and textile based art work, creating garments, embroidery, tapestries, beaded works, and soft sculptures that embrace femininity, color and whimsical narratives that takes inspiration from the Bible, childhood, folk and fairytales, nature and the nude form.
